How to Make Binangkal: A Classic Filipino Snack
By Harrie David B. Cabigas

Binangkal refers to small, deep-fried dough balls, often coated with sesame seeds, popular in the Visayas and Mindanao regions of the Philippines. It's essentially a type of doughnut or fried bread that's also sometimes called "buchi". The name "binangkal" is derived from "bangkal," the local name for a Leichhardt tree that bears spherical flowers and fruits, which the fried balls resemble.

There are many binangkal vendors all over the Philippines, and each one has its own recipe and unique way of making it. But you don’t have to buy it, you can also make your own binangkal at home. This blog will guide you step by step on how to make your very first homemade binangkal using simple ingredients and an easy method.

Below is an easy recipe and step-by-step guide on how to make Binangkal at home.

Ingredients

Binangkal Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 Cup powdered milk
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon melted butter (or margarine)
  • 1/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 1  piece of egg
  • 1/2 Cup sesame seeds
  • oil for deep frying

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, powdered milk, and baking powder.

  • In another bowl, combine the sugar, evaporated milk, melted butter, and egg. Mix well.

  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Mix until fully combined. Knead the dough for a few minutes until smooth and slightly sticky.

  • Take a small portion of dough and roll it into a ball. Roll the ball in sesame seeds until fully coated. Roll it again between your palms to help the seeds stick. Repeat with the rest of the dough.

  • Heat enough oil in a deep pan. Fry the binangkal balls over medium heat until they turn golden brown.

  • Remove from the oil and place them on a paper towel or strainer to drain the excess oil.
